The Iranian leader of the Iraqi paramilitary group Popular Mobilization Unit, Jamal Jafaar Mohammed Ali Ebrahimi (widely known under his alias Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis) has been killed in a US airstrike on the Baghdad International Airport. The airstrikes were launched following multiple attacks on the US embassy in Baghdad by PMU affiliated forces and the death of a US contractor by a rocket attack at a military base near Kirkuk. Also killed in the strike was Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, a close associate of al-Muhandis and himself the leader of a paramilitary group (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps).
